Bank holiday battlefield at Arundel Castle

Arundel Castle in West Sussex is set to become the scene of a medieval raid this late May bank holiday, 25-27 May, when a brand-new event will take the Castle by storm: Raiders of the 15thCentury: England vs. France.

Set over three days in the summer half-term, Raiders of the 15th Century: England vs. France will recreate the era following the Wars of the Roses when French raiding parties began to ransack England’s south coast. The French were acting in retaliation – King Edward IV had hatched a plan to invade France and lay claim to its throne.

Raids of the past will come to life in three tented encampments on the Lower Lawns. The Raven Tor Living History Group and the Wessex Medieval Alliance will perform two thrilling skirmishes a day, while medieval gunnery displays by The Compagnie of Seint Barbara will demonstrate the importance of artillery in this exciting age when mighty castles faced siege and capture.

A professional storyteller will also be in session twice each day in the tented encampments, telling tales of days gone by to capture young imaginations. Alongside the storyteller, visitors can expect 15th century crafts and Raiders of the 15th Century at Arundel Castlecooking as well displays of weaponry and armour.

Castle Manager Stephen Manion commented:

“We’re delighted to announce the debut of Raiders of the 15th Century: England vs. France. For families looking for something to do together this late May bank holiday and summer half-term, this event is a great excuse to get outdoors and learn about the past. If you’re a history fanatic, you’ll be blown away by our medieval artillery! The walled gardens will be filled with spring flowers and looking beautiful, so anyone visiting for the event should make sure to enjoy a stroll around them, too.”

Raiders of the 15th Century: England vs. France will run from 10am – 4.30pm and is included in standard admission prices to the Castle. Although Arundel Castle was not under siege during this period, the utmost care has been taken in delivering a historically accurate and educational experience.
